Community, environment & partnerships

Environmental Work Must Be Built with Northern Partners

Mining and mine closure occur in a region with long-established Indigenous relationships, community knowledge and regulatory processes. MMT would seek early discussion and appropriate participation rather than represent former operator relationships as its own.

Principles

MMT engagement principles

  1. 01

    Meaningful early consultation

  2. 02

    Transparent measurement and reporting

  3. 03

    Respect for Indigenous knowledge

  4. 04

Preference for qualified Northern workers and suppliers where practical

  5. 05

    Fit-for-purpose environmental protection

  6. 06

    No premature claims of endorsements

Historical context

Prior Impact Benefit Agreements

Burgundy disclosed four Impact Benefit Agreements involving the Hamlet of Kugluktuk and Kitikmeot Inuit Association; Akaitcho Treaty 8 partners (Yellowknives Dene First Nation and Łutsel K’e Dene First Nation); the Tłı̨chǫ Government; and the North Slave Métis Alliance.

These are historical agreements associated with Ekati. They are not MMT agreements and cannot be assumed to transfer.

Environment

Environmental program context

Previous operator disclosures described monitoring of caribou and other wildlife, aquatic effects, mine effluent, seepage, waste materials and progressive reclamation. The details and accountabilities must be updated through the current receiver, government and regulatory bodies.

Discuss a technical or community partnership.
